Edging Options
Serged Edge
(overlocked – example image below)
Serged Edge is a classic finish for a SynSisal® rug.
- A Serged Edge is a continuous wrap of yarn around the edges of the rug that binds the fibres and keeps your rug from unravelling.
- Yarns for the Serged Edge are chosen to match the colour of your rug.
- SynSisal® rugs are surged with durable ECONYL® 100% recycled yarns.
- Attached 2mm felt backing is included.
- Serged Edge shows the least amount on the face of the rug, approximately a 9.5mm finished width.
- Suitable for heavy residential use.
Infinity Edge
(example image below)
The Infinity Edge is a minimalist finish with folded edges and an attached rug pad.
- Maximum finished width for this border option is 3.9m. To construct the Infinity Edge border, approximately 100mm of material is folded under the rug on all sides.
- Edges are folded under to create a seamless and clean look.
- Attached non-slip rug pad is included
- The finished height ranges between 9-10mm depending on the thickness of the weave.
Wide Binding – 60mm
(example image below)
Made from UV Stabilised Polyester, this border is a synthetic textile that looks similar to natural cotton but has many unique, durable features.
- This UV stabilised polyester border will resist fading from sunlight.
- It is tough and easy to clean – spills and stains wipe up with a clean, damp cloth.
- Polyester is slightly smoother than cotton but with all the texture of the natural fibre.
- Corners can be mitred (LHS image) or squared (RHS image).
- Available in 5 colours to complement your custom rug.
- Attached 2mm felt backing is included.
- Please note that the applied border will not add any extra width to your custom rug, but rather show more border material on the face of the rug.
Narrow Binding – 10-12mm
(example images below – Polyester & Twill)
Made from UV Stabilized Polyester or Twill, this border is an elegant edge solution.
- This UV stabilized border will resist fading from sunlight.
- Polyester is slightly more transparent than Twill – colour options will vary between the two options.
- Available colours to complement your custom rug.
- Attached 2mm felt backing is included.
- Please note that the applied border will not add any extra width to your custom rug, but rather show more border material on the face of the rug.

Rug Placement
Unroll your SynSisal Rug and allow it to acclimatise for 24 – 48 hours after arrival to help settle any curling of the edges before placing furniture on top.
If edges are still curling after the required acclimatisation period, back-rolling the edges in the opposite direction of the curling will speed up the settling process.
If curling is still apparent and/or you have concerns, please contact us at rugs@gibbongroup.com.au.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where are our SynSisal Custom Rugs made?
Our Custom Rugs are crafted & assembled by our talented in-house artisans in our Brisbane (Qld) warehouse.
The SynSisal® material is manufactured in Europe.
Do you offer samples?
Yes. Sample swatches are available to order directly from our website or by emailing sampling@gibbongroup.com.au with your selection. Please note that there is a limit of 6 samples for orders.
All SynSisal® samples are 150 mm X 150 mm and will be approved via a qualification process to ensure we have the colour or weave in stock to meet your timeframe.
Lead Times for production
Our production lead-times are approx. 8 weeks from the date of order and payment (+ / -) depending on the volume of rugs in production and the stock availability of your chosen colour / weave.
Please check with us at the time of quoting as busy / holiday periods can sometimes extend out to 10-12 weeks.
Availability of colours for your rug
SynSisal® Rugs has 5 classic Sisal weaves in 6 colourways (4 weaves across 4 colours stocked in Australia). Should there be insufficient stock of colour to make your rug, this could extend the production lead-time from the date of payment.
To check availability on your selected colour, please call our office on 07 3881 1777 or email us at rugs@gibbongroup.com.au
Rug Thickness
The thickness of SynSisal® Custom Rugs varies depending on the edge option selected:
- 7 mm Narrow binding
- 8 mm Serged
- 10 mm Infinity edge & Wide binding
What is the maximum width?
The maximum width of a SynSisal® Rug is 4 metres for all edge options except for Infinity Edge.
Infinity edge requires folding of the material so this will reduce your maximum width to 3900 mm (3.9 m). See “Edging Options” here for example images.
Edge finishing / binding
SynSisal® Custom Rugs require an edge finish to ensure the product does not fray or unravel.
The available edging options are;
- Serged
- Infinity Edge
- Wide Binding (60 mm of material shown on top)
- Narrow Binding (10 mm of material shown on top)
You can learn more about the Edging Options on our website
What anti-slip options are there?
Anit-slip tape is applied to all smaller sized rugs under 6 square metres in size (approx. 3 m X 2 m) but can be added to your rug by request. Please speak to your estimator when getting a quote.
All Infinity Edge rugs will have an anti-slip felt backing.
Do we stock finished rugs?
SynSisal® Custom Rugs are for the most part made-to-order, however, every so often we will produce sale items that will be offcut material that can be made into a rug.
These will be limited to specific weaves, colours and sizes based on what is available – please contact us at rugs@gibbongroup.com.au.
Payment Terms
Full payment will be required prior to assembly, as each rug is custom size, colour and design.
