tretford carpet supports life on the water

The event:

“Victoria Amazonica is a work commissioned by the NGV for the NGV Triennial”, says Ewan McEoin, Senior Curator Design and Architecture. The work is a collaboration between internationally acclaimed furniture designers from Brazil, artists from Larapinta Valley Town Camp, and Alice Springs-based designer Elliat Rich.

The concept:

Victoria Amazonica 2017 was based initially on a sketch Humberto Campana made in Alice Springs of a giant South American lily. This exuberant, large-scale soft domed structure features intricate embroidery by the Yarrenyty Arltere Artists that tells stories of rain, rivers and water.
Gibbon Group’s design team produced a handmade tretford rug to support the structure created by Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana in collaboration with Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, designers Elliat Rich and James Young and the Centre for Appropriate Technology – all based in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

“The colours of the forrest reflected in tretford Lichen’s natural heathered green and golden yellow fibres.”

The design solution:

Humberto Campana (Designer) explained, “The idea is to work with the tradition here in Australian with the indigenous people and to create patterns with the nylon nets. Bring the tradition of the flora of the Brazilian forest; the Victoria Regia plant, the water plants, and to make a pavilion inspired in this.”
“We are so proud to see all these people here in Melbourne to see what work we are doing. We did a good job with our hands and we sowed everyday. When we walk into the art centre we’d just sew,” says Marlene Rubuntja (Artist – Yarrenyty Art).

“…when people walk inside they will see this kind of kaleidoscope of stories about water …”

Elliat Rich (Production Designer) suggests, “The idea that flows through all of it is this idea that water and our relationship to water across in Sao Paolo but also in Central Australia and how we have very different relationships to water, so when people walk inside they will see this kind of kaleidoscope of stories about water … and not, here is a river … here is a lake … but really the way that water flows through and brings the country and Central Australia to life.”

Designer Justine unravels the Delight collection

“Hi Justine, as a way of introduction, can you tell us a little about yourself?”

I’m Justine Huysman, and I’ve been working as a product designer at modulyss for about 5 years. Previously, I studied textile design at the LUCA School of Arts in Ghent, Belgium. My job entails a lot of creativity, trend-watching and innovativeness. I thoroughly enjoy the process of translating creativity into carpet tiles and often take my inspiration from current trends found in daily life. For each collection, we look for a different approach to designing and always create a new concept. The main challenge during our design process lies in finding the sweet spot between creative freedom and the achievement of technical specifications in order to develop a high-performance carpet tile.

“What inspired you to design the Delight collection?”

Delight is our sophisticated response to the mixed metallic trend. Mixing metals by combining deep colours and different textures and metallic finishes, has been an edgy interior and fashion trend for some time. Recently, we have noticed that the line between residential and commercial spaces is becoming blurred. That’s why we wanted to respond to this trend with a new collection. However, in contrast to the bold presence of metallic shine in interiors, we translated it into a subtle gloss that gives the Delight collection a timeless and luxurious character. Read all about the mixed metallic trend here.

“Delight is our sophisticated response to the mixed metallic trend.”

“How is the metallic effect in the carpet tiles created?”

We experimented with dull and glossy yarns to create a sophisticated shine. The combination of both types of yarn allowed us to represent the metallic effect subtly and more alluringly. Our plan was to do this for several products, each having its own look. The 5 designs are tied together by their similar colour palette and different but compatible textures, which also allows them to be mixed & matched, one of the strengths of our collections.
Blaze was inspired by the digital pixel rain. It combines the minimal design of a minituft with a subtle shine and an irregular yarn pattern. We really wanted to add a minituft to the Delight range because it’s one of modulyss’ signature designs.
Dusk and Dawn have the most expressive drawings. Both feature a multi-layer effect that only reveals the metallic shine randomly, in different spots and only after a few layers. Dusk translates this effect into a geometric structure that is reminiscent of the aging process of materials like peeling paint. Dawn, on the other hand, has a more organic marble look.
Inspired by the lush and luxurious residential carpets, Gleam offers a rich and dense carpet tile. It invites you to take off your shoes and feel its softness. When you walk on it, the long piles lie in different directions, providing a deep texture and a colour-changing effect that we love. By adding black yarns to the dull and glossy yarns, we created an even more intense and aged colour effect.
For the Spark collection, we started with a layer of colour and put a subtle metallic effect on top. It’s the perfect substitute for the Metallic collection, but transcends it in its elegance. The colour palette allows you to go for a tone-on-tone look, or to create a bold colour combination.

“Can you tell us something about the colour palette?”

Metallic chic is all about rich and deep colours. For Delight, we based our colour palette on the main metallic hues like gold, copper, silver and rose gold, to which we added rich and trending colours. From the start of our design process, we kept in mind that the 5 products should be mixed & matched. That’s why we designed them in similar colours. Fun fact: when you arrange the sample folders below one another, you can clearly notice the parallel colour palette.

“Why are Dusk and Dawn divided into a matt and bright version?”

We wanted to give creative freedom to architects and designers. The matt version has a minimum share of glossy yarns, and the bright version has a minimum share of dull yarns. This allows designers to combine them, but also to use them separately without losing the metallic effect. By mixing both versions, you can create a lot of depth with just one colour or one design.

“How do you envision this collection being used in a project?”

Thanks to the diversity in designs and the unifying colour palette, we’re looking forward to seeing how designers and architects will use their creativity in mixing & matching the 5 designs. Ultimately, we imagine them being combined in one building.

Inspiring design: Bosch HQ

happy work environment

modulyss at Bosch’s new headquarters in Victoria not only ensures a flexible working environment, but it is also interesting, and more importantly, inspiring. “When you’re happy in your work environment, you’re happy at work,” says Brooke Barr, one of approximately 800 employees at Bosch’s new headquarters in Victoria. As one of the world’s leading multinational engineering and electronics companies, Bosch is synonymous with German design and engineering excellence.
Designed by VIA Architects, the new headquarters in Clayton, Victoria shows the company’s diversified activity portfolio, which includes supporting new business and R&D initiatives.

“Collaboration is an important part of any workplace, our new headquarters with its inspiring working conditions embodies this approach,” says Mounir Kiwan, Corporate Affairs Manager.

To match Bosch’s innovative and collaborative focus and maximise employee comfort and inspiration within a space, VIA architects specified approximately 5,904-square-metres of modulyss Alpha 942 carpet tiles, which were supplied by Gibbon Group.

“We were really happy with the tone and consistent variation across the large floor. The carpet tiles are wearing well and blend seamlessly across the floor,” explains Clarissa Young, Senior Interior Designer at VIA Architects.

modulyss is a Eurpoean based manufacturer and part of the Balta group which the second largest carpet mill group in Europe. Gibbon Group source from modulyss and represent the entire Australian market for them. modulyss designs are drawn from a Eurpoean influence. modulyss was the first EU manufacturer to use recycled fibres.

The Delight range is the 2018 release of products from modulyss. All carpets are Red list free, solvent and PVC free, GECA certified, incorporate 100% Econyl yarn (recycled commercial fishing nets), and bitumen backing made partially of recycled materials.

Environmental initiatives:

Rising to the challenge of global warming, selected carpet tiles are now available with low CO2 emissions in our CO2RE carbon offset initiative.

As part of the modulyss sustainable mission to reduce the Life Cycle Impact of each product, modulyss decided to join Healthy Seas as an associate partner member.

Thanks to the modulyss CARE end-of-life-solution, life-expired polyamide carpet tiles are sustainably recycled into regenerated raw materials and secondary fuel. The minerals are extracted from the carpet tiles and recycled into raw material for the cement production industry, which results in 50% recycling of our carpet tiles.
